Chittenden County Metropolitan Planning Organization

The Chittenden County Metropolitan Planning Organization (CCMPO) is responsible for transportation planning and programming transportation funds in Chittenden County. Local communities and the Governor created the CCMPO in 1983 under federal law requiring the formation of a “Metropolitan Planning Organization” (MPO) for the urbanized area to plan and budget the use of about $30 million in federal transportation funds each year. Matching funds are provided by the 18 County municipalities, CCTA, and the Vermont Agency of Transportation. The annual CCMPO budget from all sources for county-wide transportation planning, including our grants to municipalities and other organizations, is about $3.5 million.

In 1998 the CCMPO expanded to cover all 18 communities in Chittenden County. The CCMPO advises decision-makers on regional transportation policy and funding issues, coordinates a diversity of projects with local communities, and serves as a forum for interagency cooperation and public input into funding decisions. Planning and programming activities cover roadways, public transit, bicycle and pedestrian facilities, and preservation and maintenance of the transportation system. The CCMPO is Vermont's only MPO and serves about 145,000 people.

The CCMPO is co-located with its sister planning agency, the Chittenden County Regional Planning Commission (CCRPC), which provides land use transportation planning services, and the two organizations have reciprocal board membership.
